I have yet to try these myself but I have been told by others that Soap Nuts are great and very economical to use.  My friend tells me he uses 6  ‘nuts’ (berries) in his wash, which generally lasts for 6 loads(!), once the soapnuts lose their sheen it is time to replace them.  That sounds pretty awesome to me so I’ll be trying them out for myself pretty soon. 🙂  Below is some info I extracted from Vegan Online for you all to read:

Soap nuts are not really nuts, but the fruits of the soapnut tree which grows wild in India. The fruit is nestled in a firm outer shell. When the soapnut fruit ripens, it falls off the tree. It is harvested and naturally sun dried without being subjected to any chemical process, harmful chemicals or artificial ingredients.

Eaternal Soapnut Shells are perfect for laundry, washing dishes, and household surfaces. They are gentle on fabrics and clean and soften clothes the natural way. They are Certified Organic, Eco-friendly packaging and hypoallergenic.

  1. Thank you for this great blog! I’ve never heard of this product (or a soapnut tree!)and am excited that I stumbled onto your blog today. If you’re interested in more environmentally safe cleaning products this company, Pure and Gentle Soaps has tons to offer….and based on your screen name, I think you’d be happy to note that they don’t test on animals either!

Thanks Mel for dropping by. Can you please tell us if Pure & Gentle uses any animal products or bi-products in any ingredients? We promote only vegan products on this site as animal based ingredients are often sourced from slaughterhouses and/or factory farms – which are by no stretch of the imagination “cruelty free”. I look forward to hear back from you regarding this. All the best.
